“We provide the live interpretation in English and Thai here at the meeting.”
On Friday the 19th of April, I accomplished my two hardest tasks after laid down on my bed for almost a whole week as the university was closed for Songkran day, big thanks to my lovely air conditioner that saved my life. The first task was to get up from my bed, the second task is to admit that the summer was real.
I drove the car along the Ratchadamnoen area which is where the old but gold town of Bangkok located. The UNESCAP building was somewhere in there, huge and seemed so powerful due to the international flags waved beautifully all over the place. I parked the car and entered, I was totally surprised by the skills of the security guard, they pointed out to us clearly after we asked about the direction to the UNCC building.
The United Nations is one of the most famous organizations in the world. It is a dream of many talented students, including students from the Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University. To cooperate with the international can be stairs to improve ourselves and to improve our perspective towards the world.
At the entrance, I had to pass the security check and showed my identity card in order to get the card of visitor that printed out my photo on it.
The coffee corner gave me decent services, most importantly, the UN literally focused on the environment as the organization was trying to create zero waste. The bar did not serve any plastic bottle, customers got the glass bottle if they asked for water and in case you wanted to use a mug, you will need to make a deposit for one hundred baht and get that cash back after you return it to staffs.
We met a lady who is one of the UNESCAP employees, Ms.Tuenjai Chubsamai, she showed us around the building which was constructed for a long time ago. She said, "the Thai officials gave this land to UNESCAP for rent with the price of one dollar per year."
The lady also told us about all of the art pieces that were being decorated on each floor, some from China, Japan, and many other countries around Asia and the Pacific. Each artwork has stunning detail and specific charisma.
The UN meeting room was elegant, with the big space and the semicircle desks same like I saw on the television several times.
Ms.Tuenjai told us, “the representatives will fly to Bangkok for the meetings, and due to the reason that these people are from different countries, use different languages, so the UNESCAP headquarter in Bangkok will provide the live interpretation into two languages, Thai and English.”
However, at the international level, the UN has six official languages which are English, French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, and Arabic. Also, provide the live interpretation in six languages during the meetings.
the live voice translation tool.
I was doing my exchange year in Russia in 2013-2014,
glad to know that Russian is one of the official languages used in The United Nations.
I walked inside the souvenirs shop that sells all of the goods from the UN, the main color I saw was white and light blue. The price was set up a little bit high as the income will be used for the charity. I tasted the chocolate as well, it was not more special than simple ones but I felt warm in my heart as the label said that those chocolates were made by the disabilities.
Our last session held in the Theatre, with the presentation to explain to us what is UNESCAP?
“The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the regional development arm of the United Nations for the Asia-Pacific region. Made up of 53 Member States and 9 Associate Members, the region is home to 4.1 billion people or two-thirds of the world’s population. This makes ESCAP the most comprehensive of the United Nations five regional commissions, and the largest United Nations body serving the Asia-Pacific region with over 600 staff.” said the UNESCAP official website.
and also tell us about their work, their environment at the workplace and how harmony the team is. It seems to me that to work at the UNESCAP will surely make me feel like home, on the other hand, this place will help a lot in improving my English and also Russian skills as I used to speak it fluently three years ago.
Another interesting fact of the UNESCAP, the average age of staffs here is about 45 years! it is impressive as the staffs’ perspectives are so modern, not old-fashioned at all. But because of the average age was so high, the staff gave us a lot of details about how to work at the UNESCAP and internship in the last year of the degree. Without considering the GPA, this leading organization is more likely to pay attention to our previous experiences and skills.
Kahoot is everywhere! with the unexpectable quiz from the UN staffs, they did the Kahoot game online for us to compete. The questions were all related to the contents in the Theatre that we have already listened to, such as; how many countries participated in the UN-ESCAP?
and the answer is 53!
Wish I can get through the serious application form and be a part of The United Nations one day!
